NewVIc is London’s largest sixth form college with over 2500 full-time students. Established in Newham in 1992, the college community includes over 300 staff. Linda Daniels is Payroll Officer and has been responsible for co-ordinating and submitting the College’s workforce data to the SIR Data Insights service. We asked Linda her opinions on the new service:
“The SIR Data Insights service is a big improvement. It’s been much easier this year once we got going.
We have always done the SIR submissions and to be honest it was a nightmare to start with. This year was a completely different system with a whole new way of doing the submission.
We had some difficulties with our College firewall to start with, but we contacted the SIR Data Insights Help Desk and they were excellent. They gave us a lot of help.
Once we got the hang of it, it was very easy. We downloaded our data from last year, downloaded info from our payroll system, cross-referenced and updated. Some of the fields stayed the same, like ethnicity and age, so that saved time. It didn’t take that long in the end.
It was nice to be able to choose which bits to leave in and which to leave out. We were able to add in some new data.
I used to fear the SIR, I don’t any more. This is much better; you can choose how much information you want to give. You just need to make sure that you have the data in a way that’s usable by adding in data fields to what you collect every year, such as qualifications. In other words, you just need to be organised.”
